The cap rock is located beneath the quicksand. It consists of limestone, gypsum, and anhydrite; below this is salt. (15) The cap rock varies in thickness from less than fifty feet to more than one thousand feet, depending on the dome. The “caps” usually extend down the periphery of the salt plugs thereby forming a seal. Bechtel, A., S. M. Savin, and S. Get this from a library. Origin of the cap rock of Louisiana salt domes. [Ralph E Taylor]. Salt domes are very important to the petroleum industry.
As a salt dome grows, the cap rock above it is arched upwards. This cap rock can serve as an oil or natural gas reservoir. As a dome grows, the rocks that it penetrates are arched upwards along the sides of the dome (see both illustrations at the top of this page).
Origin of the Cap Rock ofLouisianaSalt Domes, by R. Taylor, Louisiana Geological Survey,pp. (Discusses origin and general geology of the salt and cap rock of Louisiana salt domes; chemical composition of salt; minerals in salt and cap rock; and the origin and occurrence of sulphur.
Includes map of Louisiana salt domes. Petrographic analyses of cap rock from Rayburn's and Vacherie Domes (Louisiana) and Cypress Creek and Richton Domes (Mississippi) further substantiate the two different types of cap rock. The cap rock from Rayburn's Dome is similar to that at Gyp Hill Dome, whereas the cap rock from Vacherie is similar to Oakwood Dome cap rock.
Textures within anhydrite cap rock are products of repeated cycles of halie dissolution and residual anhydrite accretion at tops of salt stocks. Quarrying operations at Winnfield dome have exposed extensive portions of the anhydrite cap rock.

Salt was discovered in in the drilling of a water well, and sulphur was discovered in in an oil test. The salt is mined from a depth of feet in the salt spine.
The sulphur is mined from a deposit between two faults in the cap rock at depths. Dynamical Geology of Salt and Related Structures deals with many aspects of the dynamical evolution of salt bodies in sedimentary basins.
This book consists of four major sections. Section A deals with salt dynamics and the motion of salt. The cap rock of some salt domes, and sometimes the rock salt itself, is found to overhang, or drape down, the side of the main salt mass.
It is commonly found to overhang on one or two sides. The reason for the overhang probably is dependent upon the nature of circulating waters in the sediments through which the dome is ascending.

Salt domes may be sheathed in a thin skin of anhydrite or mudstone "gouge". Some cap rock contains sulphur that was commercially extractable until the cleaning of sour gas provided a cheaper and more abundant source.
The sulphur of salt domes is associated. The active exploration of the domes since that time, in the mining of oil, sulphur, and salt, has served chiefly to emphasize the essential regularity of the domes, their general conformability to type, and to emphasize the uplift of the overlying and contiguous strata by the formation of the salt core and cap rock of the dome.
